Piper fully supports KnoxCharterPetition.com’s nine requests to address nepotism, conflict of interest, responsiveness and accountability in our Legislative Branch in addition to nepotism, conflict of interest, waste, fraud and abuse, cost savings and accountability in the Executive Branch. 

These requests can be placed on the August ballot for Knox Countains to vote on with a two-thirds vote from County

Cortney Piper is a Democrat candidate for County Commission Seat 2B.  She served on the Knox County One Question Steering Committee that was formed to restore the public’s trust and strengthen government in Knox County.  Knox County One Question Steering Committee members unanimously approved these recommendations.

I am surprised by the endorsement of Amy Broyles in the Second District, not because of any lack of ability on Amy’s part, but because we have a stronger candidate in Cortney Piper.

Look at her collegiate academic and athletic accomplishments. She was the senior co-captain of the Lady Vols swim team in the most competitive conference in the nation, earning SEC academic honors all four years of her college career.

After UT, Cortney’s drive and commitment have not waned and have been focused on supporting her community at all levels – neighborhood, government and philanthropic – showing compassion toward God’s creatures and choosing a career path aimed at helping the environment (water quality). The 2nd District won’t be voting for a commissioner based on how many times any particular candidate has run for the seat or how involved a candidate is in his or her political party.

Rather, it will be looking for an individual with a profound sense of civic duty, strength of character and the dedication to make a meaningful contribution to commission.

My name is Cortney Piper. 

I’m running for Commission because I’m committed to transforming our county government into a truly citizen driven vehicle.

I see a need for Commissioners who are LEADERS, have INTEGRITY and can ENGAGE others to FOCUS on SOLUTIONS and move Knox County forward.

Continuing with initiatives like the Ethics Commission, conflict of
interest and nepotism policies have the ability to create a structure of government that meets the needs of our community first and foremost rather than catering to political cronyism.

I am committed to serving the Second District and Knox County residents by making myself 100% accessible for you to voice your concerns.

Let’s talk about education.  It makes up 2/3 of the county’s budget.
 
My commitment to education is clear.

I graduated from the University of Tennessee with honors both from the University and from the Southeastern Conference for academic excellence during my swimming career.  I continue my professional education with the Institute for Charitable Giving.

My experience as a fundraising professional taught me you can have the best plan for moving a vision forward.  But, if you don’t have the proper resources behind that vision, it will go nowhere.

Commission’s role in creating the best schools for our children begins with focusing resources on teacher and principal recruitment and retention, increasing accessibility to social services so our children can come to school and learn and allocating needed resources to our core city schools to alleviative overcrowding.

Lastly, Knox County has almost 360 miles of streams on the state’s list of most polluted and impaired waters. 

The city’s decision to sue the county over the stormwater ordinance is a good one.   The legal system is a good tool to remove politics from the decision making process and focus on what is right and what is just.  That’s protecting everyone’s right to clean water and property.

Given our current political climate, we need voters to bring county government back to the people.  Voters will make the difference in transforming our government into a citizen driven vehicle.  My campaign is focused on the February 5th election and engaging our community in decisions that affect our lives.

 I will not seek an appointment to Knox County Commission. I will serve the Second District only when elected by the voters.

I appreciate the time and attention given to the Sunshine Trials.  This event plays a key role in realizing our potential to become a truly citizen driven government.
